Lenten Formation Series: Loving Your Enemies - Political Conversations in 2025

 11:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Liem Azar Cathedral Center

In his 1957 sermon “Loving Your Enemies", The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King unpacked Jesus’ call and its both practical and theoretical dimensions.  King challenged his congregation saying that “hate destroys the hater” yet at the same time urged them not to acquiesce to oppression saying, “non cooperation with evil is as much a moral obligation as cooperation with good.”

How do we in 2025 navigate that careful balance between non cooperation with evil and protecting our hearts from hate towards policies and political actors that we might find painful?  How do we listen with informed generosity and grade to people in our own lives from friends to strangers who see things differently from us?

Come ready to discuss these things and to learn about Political Empathy Lab’s summer 2024 trip around Pennsylvania (10 weeks, 7 undergrads, 2500 miles in Pennsylvania) and the Phase II trip gearing up for May 2025.

Presenter:  Dr. Lia Howard, Fellows Director at the SNF Paideia Program at the University of Pennsylvania
