The Great Vigil of Easter

 5:00 p.m.

Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral - The Rt. Rev. Daniel Gutierrez, Presider & Preacher

On this most holy night, in which our Lord Jesus passes over from death to life, we celebrate the Great Vigil of Easter, one of the most ancient of all liturgies.  The service begins in darkness with the kindling of new fire and the lighting of the Paschal candle.  In the darkened nave in candlelight, we recall God's interventions throughout history with the chanting of psalms and readings from holy scripture. Then, with sudden bursts of light, the Resurrection is proclaimed and the first Eucharist of Easter is celebrated by the Bishop. On this night the Bishop also administers the Rites of Christian Initiation to those from around the Diocese who desire to be baptized, confirmed, received or reaffirmed into Christ's one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
